Archery tournaments come in all styles--indoors, outdoors, shooting from a line or from a marker stake.  National organizations have formed to develop rules and awards for tournaments and clubs.  Each organization hosts events with various categories for equipment styles and archer abilities.  Several styles of archery may overlap from more than a single organization, but here is a sample of the styles, and some links to the national organizations most likely to be conducting them:

Target Archery

Target Archery is shot indoor or outdoors while standing on the shooting line together, shooting in the same direction at a row of targets using recurve or compound bows (some even include crossbow divisions).  Major tournaments include the NFAA Vegas Shoot (indoors) and the USA Archery Nationals (outdoors) Excellent archers can even earn an income as tournament professionals.

The Olympic Games
Archery is an Olympic Sport with more than 140 countries participating in Olympic Style Archery. The Olympic Round consists of exciting Match Play elimination rounds for both men’s and women’s classes. A fast paced Team round is also shot, in both the men’s and women’s classes.

All Olympic round competitions are shot at a 122cm target
face at 70 meters with recurve bows only.

The International Archery Federation, FITA, also holds World Championships and a World Cup series during non-Olympic Years. There are opportunities for Junior’s under the age of 18 and Collegiate archers to compete at FITAWorld Championships.

Field Archery

Field Archery is shot on a challenging course, with targets placed at different distances, up hill, down hill, or on the side of a mountain. The archers walk the course from target to target, often in the woods. Most Field courses have targets at marked distances. Some field rounds are also shot at unmarked distances, requiring increased skills of the competitors.

Several organizations offer field rounds, and other types of rounds that may include a hunter round or an animal round. The types, sizes and scoring of target faces may differ.  Compound bows dominate this style of sport, but recurve bows have popular divisions as well

3-D Archery

3-D Archery is shot on a course like Field Archery, however the
targets are made of foam that is molded and painted to resemble game animals.

3-D Archery is extremely popular throughout
the United States.

Most courses are of unmarked distances to closely resemble bowhunting where calculating distance is important in achieving aiming accuracy.
